Grow A Colony Eggs and Ant Types

Workers, Majors, and Drones — who to hatch, when, and how to scale your colony.

Eggs and Ants

Every ant in Grow A Colony starts as an egg hatched at your queen’s nest. Unlike hero-shooter Roblox games, power here is headcount plus role mix — Workers fuel the economy, Majors (Soldiers) deal damage, and Drones (Tanks) absorb hits so Majors survive bugs, creatures, rival colonies, and boss events like the Queen Bee raid. Understanding egg types prevents the classic failure mode: a dozen fighters with empty food storage and no gatherers left to recover.

This guide explains each ant role, recommended hatch ratios for early, mid, and late colony phases, and how Update 5.2 (Skill Tree) and 5.3 (new-player fairness) interact with egg costs. Pair it with Food and Water so every hatch is fed.

The three egg types

TypeCombat roleEconomy roleFood impact
WorkerMinimalScavenge pickups, support dig/buildBrings food in
Major (Soldier)High melee DPSNoneConsumes food
Drone (Tank)High HP front lineNoneConsumes food

Troop orders apply after hatch:

  • Follow — rally ants to the queen.
  • Scavenge — Workers only (never leave fighters on this by accident).
  • Attack — Majors and Drones clear PvE and PvP targets.

Worker eggs: economy first

Workers are the colony’s paycheck. They collect food pickups, support expansion, and keep the queen’s timers running. Hatch Workers until:

  • Food storage stays green during two full Scavenge cycles.
  • You can afford one Major and still recover if a bug kill goes wrong.
  • Dig projects in Dig and Build will not pause egg queues from starvation.

Early target for new queens (after Getting Started): 4–8 Workers before heavy Major investment. Update 5.3 makes early food less punishing, but over-hatching Majors still stalls growth.

Workers die easily if left on Attack during War and PvP — reassign instantly.

Major eggs: Soldiers for damage

Majors are your offensive backbone against bugs, surface creatures, and enemy Majors in colony wars. They hit hard but fold without Drones in front.

When to hatch Majors:

  1. After Worker baseline is stable.
  2. Before pushing deeper PvE in Beat Bugs and Bosses.
  3. Before declaring war — read War and PvP first.

Mid-game ratio starting point: 2 Majors per 4–6 Workers, adjusted by skill tree damage nodes.

Majors do not gather — each extra Major increases food drain without increasing income. Time hatches after successful scavenging runs or daily reward claims (Codes may add food later, but none are active now).

Drone eggs: Tanks that win wars

Drones soak damage for Majors and the queen. They are slower killers but enable longer fights against Queen Bee mechanics and player Drone walls.

Add your first Drone when:

  • You plan a boss attempt or mini-raid.
  • A neighbor colony scouts your tunnels (12-player servers are dangerous).
  • Majors die too fast even with good Attack micro.

Late-game war comps often run 1 Drone per 2 Majors, shifting toward more Drones during heavy PvP seasons. Check Tier List for current meta weighting.

How to get more ants (eggs)

Eggs come from queen production fueled by food and progression systems:

  1. Steady food income — Workers on Scavenge plus water access.
  2. Daily reward streaks — bonus food or egg charges on login.
  3. PvE clears — bugs and creatures drop loot that accelerates hatches.
  4. Boss events — Queen Bee raids reward bursts of resources when successful.
  5. PvP spoils — defeating rival colonies can yield ants/food (high risk).
  6. Skill tree — Update 5.2 nodes may reduce costs or boost hatch speed (Skill Tree).

There is no honest “infinite egg” exploit without risking bans via shady Scripts — avoid them.

Hatch queue discipline

Queue eggs in batches aligned with food projections:

  • Batch Workers when expanding economy or recovering from war losses.
  • Batch one Major before spider zones or player border skirmishes.
  • Batch Drones before synchronized Attack pushes.

Cancel or pause hatches if food yellow-lines — starving mid-hatch wastes partial progress depending on patch behavior; verify after Updates notes.

Role synergy in combat

Standard PvE engagement:

  1. Drones on Attack — walk into bug packs first.
  2. Majors on Attack — focus highest threat (spiders, elite bugs).
  3. Workers on Scavenge or Follow behind the line — loot after clear.

Queen Bee raids may require temporary Follow on all troops to reposition — see Beat Bugs and Bosses.

PvP differs: enemy Workers may attempt economy raids on your storage tunnels. Keep at least two Majors on Follow near the queen while others Attack.

Progression checklist

  • 4+ Workers with stable Scavenge loop
  • First Major for bug clears
  • First Drone before first boss or war
  • Skill tree food or combat node unlocked
  • Defensive dig room for new hatchlings

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Grow A Colony on Roblox.

What is the difference between Major and Drone ants?

Majors (Soldiers) deal high damage; Drones (Tanks) absorb damage for the line. Use both together in Beat Bugs and Bosses and War and PvP.

How many Workers should I hatch first?

Aim for 4–8 Workers with stable food before mass Majors. See Getting Started and Food and Water for timing.

Can Workers fight in Grow A Colony?

They can be ordered to Attack but die quickly. Keep Workers on Scavenge unless retreating with Follow.

Do promo codes give free eggs?

Not currently — no verified active codes on Codes. Earn eggs through food, daily rewards, and combat loot.

Does the skill tree affect hatching?

Update 5.2 added a skill tree that can improve colony efficiency. Read Skill Tree before spending points on hatch-related nodes.
