Grow A Colony Skill Tree Tier List

Which 5.2 skill branches to unlock first—and which to delay until food and Majors are stable.

Skill Tree Tier List

Update 5.2 added a full skill tree to [SKILLS] Grow A Colony, and 5.3 followed with QOL and new-player fairness tweaks. Skills multiply whatever your eggs already do—They do not replace Workers on Scavenge or Majors on Attack. This page tiers branch priorities so you spend points on spikes that match your build and ant roles, not on luxury nodes that look powerful in a menu but need food you do not have yet.

Detailed node names change as sebcaddy1 balances patches; treat tiers as categories and verify labels in-game after reading the skill tree guide.

How skill tiers work here

TierPick timing
SFirst points in a session or immediately after a food milestone
ASecond wave—after S foundations are online
BThird wave—specialized or war-only
CVanity, marginal, or prereq for something you will not use this week

Skill points are a renewable resource tied to progression—wasting them hurts as much as wasting eggs. Run the colony checklist so unspent points are not left on logout.

S-tier priorities (every build)

These branches help almost every colony before war or deep bug pushes:

  1. Food and carry capacity — Anything that raises Worker Scavenge efficiency or shortens return trips stays S-tier in early and mid game. Without it, hatch queues stall even if egg priority is perfect.
  2. Hatch speed or egg efficiency — Faster Workers mean faster everything else. Pair with the egg priority tool.
  3. Basic combat durability for Majors — Not glass-cannon damage—survival so your first Attack squad clears insects without wiping. Enables mid-game map nodes in bugs and bosses.
  4. Queen / colony QOL from 5.3 — Fairness and interface upgrades that reduce mis-clicks on Follow / Scavenge / Attack or recover from newbie mistakes rank S for new accounts even if veterans skip them.

If you must choose one S pick and food is negative, always choose food-related nodes first. Combat S-tier picks are S-tier only after five minutes of stable surplus on your checklist.

A-tier priorities (after S foundations)

Branch themeTierNotes
Major damage or swarm sizeAAfter food S-tier; powers bug zones
Drone unlock amplifiersAWhen Drones are already B-tier or better in ant roles
Dig / nest expansionAMore chambers = more hatch throughput
Scouting or map awarenessAHelps before war and PvP
Worker defense while ScavengingAReduces bug pick-offs on economy units

A-tier picks should align with your build: economy build weights carry and hatch; combat build weights Major and Drone combat after a thinner food package.

B-tier priorities (specialists)

  • Drone burst or elite bug counters — Strong when farming high tiers from bugs and bosses; weak if you still only farm surface insects.
  • Raid or colony war tools — B until rivals actually hit your server; then jump to A or S for the war window.
  • Advanced dig shortcuts — Pretty for base aesthetics; B for progression unless food is overflowing.
  • Minor Follow-mode buffs — Useful for queen escort deep digs; skip if you play near nest core.

C-tier delays (common traps)

  • Max damage before max food — Glass Majors die once; Workers cannot replace them fast enough.
  • Duplicate bonuses — Second node that only adds +5% to a stat you already stacked elsewhere.
  • Late-tree capstones without prereq usage — Ultimate Drone node when you hatch two Drones total.
  • PvP-only debuffs when server is peaceful — Pretty war skills with nobody to target.

Skill order by build

Early / first account (early game build)

Food S → hatch S → Major durability A → QOL S (5.3) → dig A. Delay Drone amplifiers until mid game tiers say Drones are A-tier.

Economy (economy build)

Stack food and carry S-tier twice if allowed, then hatch speed, then Worker defense A. Combat nodes stay B until surplus food hits your build target.

Combat (combat build)

Food S (minimum viable) → Major damage A → Drone A → war B branches promoted to S before declared raids. Never zero food S-tier for damage.

Synergy with eggs and troop modes

Skills that buff Scavenge multiply Worker output—your S-tier role from ant roles. Skills that buff Attack multiply Majors and Drones but do not gather food; schedule those picks after Scavenge routes are guarded.

Follow mode benefits from queen QOL and escort B-tier picks when you dig horizontally away from storage. Attack mode benefits from combat A/S picks once egg priority includes replacement Majors.

When to respec or pivot

Grow A Colony may not offer free respecs—treat points as permanent until the devs say otherwise. If you mis-spend, compensate with eggs and modes, not rage hatching Drones. Check Updates after patches; 5.2 and 5.3 both shifted what new players should pick first.

Optional Codes boosts do not replace tree order; they shorten grind toward the same S-tier branches.

Spend points like food: steady investments beat flashy one-offs. Revisit this list when your colony doubles in size or when war starts—those events change which B-tier branches become S-tier overnight.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Grow A Colony on Roblox.

What was added in skill tree update 5.2?

5.2 introduced the skill tree system itself—progression branches that augment Workers, Majors, Drones, digging, and queen QOL. Prioritize economy nodes first unless you are purely PvP-focused on a hot server.

Do 5.3 QOL skills outrank combat skills for new players?

Often yes. Fairness and QOL nodes that prevent early colony collapse rank S-tier for first accounts until food and Majors stabilize.

Should combat players skip food skills entirely?

No. Combat builds still need minimum S-tier food or hatch efficiency; war replaces ants you cannot afford to re-hatch.

Where do I see exact node names?

Open the in-game skill tree menu and cross-reference the skill tree guide on this wiki. Tier bands here stay valid even if individual node names change in patches.
