How to Play Grow A Colony
The full loop from first Worker to skill tree, raids, and colony war — without Robux.
How to play Grow A Colony: you are the queen ant of an AI colony on Roblox, not a lone fighter. Hatch Workers for food, Majors and Drones for combat, dig and build a nest, spend Skill Tree points from Update 5.2, and defeat bugs, creatures, and rival colonies for more ants and food. Servers hold up to 12 players. Update 5.3 added QOL and fairer new-player pacing. This walkthrough is the rules-of-the-road page; Getting Started is the hour-one checklist.
Launch only from the official Grow A Colony experience. The live title may show [SKILLS] Grow A Colony because the skill tree is the headline system.
The core loop
Every session repeats the same cycle:
- Feed — Workers on Scavenge collect food; drink water when the colony is thirsty.
- Hatch — spend food on Worker, Major, or Drone eggs in that order until the economy holds.
- Dig — carve a queen vault and one choke so surface bugs and PvP cannot walk into your throne.
- Fight — set Majors/Drones to Attack on bugs and creatures; keep the queen off the front line.
- Spend skills — open the tree from 5.2 and invest in economy before vanity combat nodes.
- War only when ready — declaring colony war on a full lobby is optional and punishing.
If any step fails, stop expanding. Starvation and an exposed queen end runs faster than a missing Hornet pass. Gamepasses are optional — see Gamepasses.
Controls in one paragraph
On PC you move the queen, pan the camera, toggle Follow / Scavenge / Attack, and use dig/build tools. On mobile the same orders live in on-screen buttons; tap carefully during raids. Full bind notes live in Controls. Practice switching troop orders in a quiet corner before you pull a spider pack. Troop Orders explains when Follow is a rally, not a death ball.
Economy before combat
Workers do not win wars; they fund wars. A Major that never eats is a corpse. Follow Food and Water and How to Get Food until the meter stays out of red for several minutes. Claim Daily Rewards every login. There are no confirmed promo codes — ignore clickbait lists on Codes.
Hatch math: three to five Workers before your first Major, then a Drone before the first serious boss. Details in Eggs and Ants and the Egg Priority planner.
Nest and map
The world is an undergrowth sandbox — tags on the Roblox page include forest floor, hive, and Grounded-style survival, not a city tycoon. Dig tunnels instead of building a house on the grass. Dig and Build covers tools; Nest Layout covers vault, pantry, and choke geometry; Map covers surface food, water, and raid neighborhoods.
PvE threats
Bugs and creatures drop ants and food. Spiders, bees, wasps, mantises, and termites appear in the official tags. Learn threat order on Creatures and Beat Bugs and Bosses. The Queen Bee raid is a set-piece — prep on Queen Bee Raid. Paid Queen Bee (Perm) and Hornet (perm) passes unlock units; they are not required to play the raid loop.
Skill tree (Update 5.2)
After the nest eats reliably, open skills. Economy nodes that improve forage, carry, or hatch value beat spreading points into every combat leaf. Skill Tree and Skills tier list plus the Skill Planner keep spends honest. 2X Points only doubles a plan you already understand.
Multiplayer and war
You share the map with other queens. Chat truces are informal. War and PvP and How to Protect the Queen are required reading before you press war. VIP servers are off — you cannot hide in a private instance.
What not to do
- Do not hatch ten Majors into an empty pantry (Beginner Mistakes).
- Do not paste loadstrings; Scripts exist as risk education only.
- Do not trust fake Trello or Discord links; see Trello and Discord.
- Do not wait for YouTube “secret codes” — we only embed videos when a real Grow A Colony ID exists, and none are verified yet.
Play the loop, then specialize with Builds and the Tier List. Bookmark Updates so 5.3 fairness notes stay aligned with your session.
