Grow A Colony Nest Layout

Vault, pantry, and choke designs so bugs and rival queens cannot walk into your throne.

Nest Layout Guide

A nest layout is the difference between a colony that respawns eggs after a raid and a wipe that dumps an hour of food. Grow A Colony lets you dig and build terrain as the queen. This page is the geometry guide: where the throne goes, how food sits, and which tunnel Majors actually defend. Tool handling lives in Dig and Build; world neighborhoods live in Map.

Update 5.3 made early play fairer, not nest-proof. An open pit on the surface still feeds spiders, wasps, and War and PvP scouts. Upgrade All Stats on the Gamepasses store will not save a layout with three front doors.

Layout goals

Every good nest does five jobs:

  1. Hide the queen — if she dies, the session is over.
  2. Store food — Workers need a dump point that is not the throne room.
  3. Choke attackers — one lane Majors and a Drone can hold.
  4. Hold eggs — space to hatch without blocking the choke.
  5. Exit to forage — a short path to surface petals without advertising the vault.

If a design fails job 1, delete it. Fancy spirals that trap your own Workers are Beginner Mistakes.

Starter layout (first 20 minutes)

  1. Dig down and aside, not a straight elevator under the busiest grass.
  2. Carve a one-tile choke (or the closest equivalent your tool allows).
  3. Place a small vault behind the choke — queen idle here on Follow when you tab out mentally.
  4. Branch a pantry alcove off the vault, not through it, so returning Workers do not body-block Majors.
  5. Leave a stub for eggs.

That is enough to claim Daily Rewards and run Scavenge. Do not hollow a cathedral before you have three Workers — see Eggs and Ants.

Mid-game layout

Add:

  • A second exit only after the first choke is staffed. Two doors without troops is two raid vectors.
  • A Drone pocket beside the choke so tanks absorb, Majors hit.
  • Slightly more pantry depth so 2X Food (if you bought it) has somewhere to sit.
  • Camera-friendly corners so you can see troop orders; Controls matter underground too.

Skill nodes from 5.2 that speed dig/build let you redraw chokes after a bad first hole. Spend those nodes with the Skill Planner instead of randomly Swiss-cheesing the dirt.

War layout

Assume another queen will path to your mound. How to Protect the Queen is the tactical companion. Layout rules:

  • No throne on the surface.
  • No pantry as the first room enemies enter.
  • Rally Follow in the vault, Attack in the choke — not the reverse.
  • Keep a food buffer so a lost Major can be replaced (How to Get More Ants).

Co-op truces during Queen Bee Raid do not make your nest public property. Close extra holes before you leave for a hive.

Layouts to avoid

  • Surface palace — looks cool, dies to the first spider or Hornet-class fight (Creatures).
  • Maze without a choke — you get lost, AI troops path poorly, raiders still find the queen.
  • Shared wall with a neighbor — accidental war.
  • Script-dug Swiss cheeseScripts fast-dig often leaves indefensible holes and ban risk.

Checklist before you log off

Use the Colony Checklist:

  • Queen in vault
  • One identifiable choke staffed or ready
  • Food not sitting on the surface
  • Extra exits sealed or guarded
  • Skill points spent so the next login is stronger, not just bigger

Redesign after patches. If 5.4 ever changes dig feel, rebuild the choke first, not the wallpaper.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about Grow A Colony on Roblox.

What is the best Grow A Colony nest layout?

Down-and-aside vault, pantry alcove, single choke for Majors/Drones, short forage exit. Expand doors only when troops exist.

Should I build on the surface?

No. Surface palaces lose to bugs and PvP. Dig a vault. See Dig and Build for tools.

How many exits should my nest have?

One until Majors can staff a second. Extra holes without troops help raiders, not you.

Does Update 5.3 change nest layouts?

It is fairer for new players but does not armor an open pit. Chokes still matter.

Do gamepasses replace good nest design?

No. 2X Food and Upgrade All Stats do not close tunnels. Layout is free and mandatory.
